PTF Enhances Tennis Standards with International Coaching Initiatives, Says Qureshi
ISLAMABAD: Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, the President of the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF), communicated major accomplishments and future strategies on Thursday, highlighting the ongoing advancements within the country’s tennis community.
In an interview, Qureshi mentioned that considerable enhancements have been implemented to the PTF’s facilities.
“We have improved the Pakistan Tennis Complex by adding a gymnasium, restrooms, a cafe, and separate living spaces for female athletes,” he stated.
He noted that Pakistani tennis athletes are engaging in more international competitions now than before.
“Only in the last year, Pakistani athletes have collectively earned over 20 million rupees in competition rewards,” he included.
To elevate the game’s standards, the PTF has enlisted international coaches to oversee training programs for both younger and experienced athletes.
“Providing opportunities for junior athletes to gain international exposure is still a main objective,” Qureshi stated.
Reflecting on his personal journey, he mentioned, “I aspire to offer current athletes resources that I never had access to.” He further explained that the PTF has started talent identification initiatives and tournaments throughout different cities to unearth rising stars.
Qureshi recognized the essential contribution of the private sector and emphasized continuous initiatives to acquire funding for both the federation and its athletes.
“We should take cues from the Pakistan Cricket Board. Cricket benefits from substantial backing, but the PCB also dedicates effort to its promotional activities,” he remarked.
He voiced concerns regarding the limited business autonomy for sports federations operating in Pakistan.
“This is not the standard worldwide. We must permit brands to market within stadiums and on courts to create income,” he stressed.
Qureshi emphasized the successful hosting of the Indian tennis team in Pakistan for the Davis Cup as a significant diplomatic triumph.
However, he voiced his regret that the Under-12 tournament that was planned to occur in Pakistan had to be moved to Sri Lanka due to geopolitical tensions.
“The Under-12 tournament will be held in Pakistan next year,” he affirmed.
Qureshi concluded by stating, “I advocate for maintaining a separation between politics and sports, as sports can foster peace. The tennis relationship between Pakistan and India should endure.”
