Knicks Dismiss Coach Thibodeau After Playoff Run
NEW YORK: The New York Knicks have terminated head coach Tom Thibodeau’s contract, a move that comes shortly after their elimination from the Eastern Conference Finals at the hands of the Indiana Pacers.
Thibodeau’s tenure with the Knicks spanned five seasons, during which the team secured four playoff appearances. This year marked their most successful postseason journey in a quarter-century, highlighted by a victory over the defending champions, the Boston Celtics, in the second round.
Knicks President Leon Rose communicated the decision in an official statement.
“Our entire organization is fully committed to securing a championship for our dedicated fans. This ambition has led us to the difficult decision of informing Tom Thibodeau that we will be pursuing a different direction,” Rose stated.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to Tom for his unwavering dedication and commitment throughout his time as the New York Knicks head coach.
“Ultimately, we believe this change is in the best interest of the organization moving forward. Tom will forever remain a part of the Knicks family, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
The Knicks’ journey in the Eastern Conference Finals concluded with a 4-2 series loss to the Indiana Pacers.
Under Thibodeau’s guidance, the Knicks achieved 50 wins in consecutive seasons, a feat not seen since 1995. He also ranks fourth in all-time wins among Knicks coaches, surpassing the legendary Pat Riley.
Thibodeau had signed a three-year contract extension with the team last summer, and his departure will reportedly cost the franchise a minimum of $30 million.
The NBA Finals are set to commence on Thursday, featuring the Pacers against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
