Recent Seismic Activity in Karachi

Since Sunday, Karachi has experienced approximately 15 minor seismic events, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) Seismic Monitoring Centre, causing concern among residents across various areas of the metropolis.

Successive Tremors

On late Monday, two consecutive tremors were detected. The initial tremor occurred precisely at 12:00 am, followed by another at 12:23 am. The PMD indicated that the first registered a magnitude of 2.6, while the second measured 2.8 on the Richter scale. Both originated at a depth of 40 kilometres, with their epicentres located northeast of Malir.

Tuesday’s Earthquake

A third tremor was recorded at 6:42 am on Tuesday, exhibiting a magnitude of 3.2 and a depth of 11 kilometres. The epicenter for this event was situated roughly 29 kilometres southwest of Korangi.

Repeated Shocks

These new tremors follow a string of jolts reported since Sunday, bringing the total to 15 within a span of fewer than three days. Regions including Landhi, Quaidabad, Malir, and nearby localities have experienced these repeated shocks, although no significant property damage or personal injuries have been documented thus far.

Expert Analysis

Chief Meteorologist Aamir Haider explained that the series of earthquakes can be attributed to the Landhi Fault Region, a seismically active zone known for generating low-intensity tremors.

Potential Aftershocks

Speaking on the matter, he noted that while this specific area is not known for generating major seismic events, the possibility of continued aftershocks in the coming days cannot be ruled out.

He also highlighted the presence of another fault line near Thana Bula Khan, which contributes to the seismic activity in the vicinity of Karachi.
