Karachi Experiences Series of Mild Earthquakes

Karachi residents experienced a series of mild earthquakes late Monday night, according to the nation’s seismic monitoring authorities.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) indicated that the most recent earthquake occurred at approximately 11:16 PM, registering a magnitude of 2.4 on the Richter scale. The quake’s origin was traced to an area near Malir, approximately 10 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.

Areas of the city where the ground shook include Landhi Sherpao Colony and Quaidabad. Initial assessments reported no immediate injuries or structural damage.

This latest event marks the tenth occurrence within the last day, prompting unease among the population. The PMD has issued warnings that minor aftershocks might persist over the next 48 hours.

Previously, a quake was detected at 8:49 PM, measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale. The Seismic Monitoring Centre pinpointed the epicenter approximately 30 kilometers east of the Defence Housing Authority, at a depth of 13 kilometers.

Earlier on the same day, around 10:25 AM, residents in Landhi and Malir reported feeling tremors. Residents from Quaidabad, Malir, Saudabad, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Khokhrapar, Steel Town, and adjacent localities also corroborated experiencing the seismic activity.

A subsequent series of tremors was felt at 11:04 AM, triggering widespread apprehension. A considerable number of inhabitants evacuated their residences in response.

The Seismological Centre issued a statement confirming that the tremor in Landhi and Malir registered a magnitude of 3.2. The epicenter was situated near Quaidabad at a depth of 10 kilometers. The official recording time for this quake was 10:29 AM.

Notably, two minor tremors were also registered in Karachi the previous night.

Chief Meteorologist Aamir Haider stated that the Malir, Quaidabad, and neighboring regions have experienced four tremors since Saturday. A quake was recorded at 5:33 PM the previous day, registering a magnitude of 3.6 with a depth of 10 kilometers, with its origin point near Quaidabad.

An additional tremor occurred at 1:06 AM the previous night, measuring 3.2 in magnitude and originating 12 kilometers below the surface, near Gadap Town.

Aamir Haider clarified that these events are linked to the Landhi Fault Region, which has historically not generated significant seismic events. He specified that the region is seismically active, along with another fault line situated near Thana Bula Khan.

He also noted that low-intensity earthquakes are frequently documented in these areas. The Kirthar region, close to the Main Boundary Thrust, also occasionally undergoes moderate tremors. The fault line may require several days to stabilize, and further minor tremors are possible in the coming period.
