Rutherford Returns to West Indies Squad for Final ODI Against England

LONDON: Sherfane Rutherford, the dynamic middle-order batsman, has rejoined the West Indies squad, providing a significant boost as they prepare for the third and final ODI against England, according to recent reports.

Rutherford arrived on Sunday, following his participation with Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Eliminator against Mumbai Indians on May 30.

The left-handed batsman performed reasonably well with the former champions, amassing 291 runs in 13 innings at an average of 32.33 and a strike rate of 157.29.

With an impressive average of 71.00 in 12 ODIs, Rutherford last played for the West Indies in December 2024. His recent form in the IPL, combined with his promising stats in the international arena, could secure him a spot in the West Indies’ middle order.

Despite already losing the three-match series, the West Indies team is aiming to end on a high note by clinching a consolation victory.

In the series opener, West Indies suffered a heavy defeat by 238 runs, with half-centuries from Jacob Bethell, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, and Joe Root. Jamie Overton and Saqib Ahmed spearheaded the bowling attack, each taking three wickets.

The visitors displayed greater resilience in the subsequent match, setting England a challenging target of 309 runs, highlighted by Keacy Carty’s century.

After reducing England to 2/2 and then 133/5, West Indies initially held a strong position. However, Joe Root’s remarkable innings of 166 runs guided the home side to a narrow three-wicket victory with only seven balls remaining.
