Root Ascends as England’s Premier ODI Run-Scorer, Overhauling Morgan
CARDIFF: Joe Root of England showcased a remarkable batting display, scoring 166 runs in the second ODI against the West Indies. This performance not only solidified his status but also enabled him to surpass previous records, highlighted by his emergence as the highest run-scorer for England in ODIs.
Root’s skillful innings propelled England to a thrilling victory by three wickets against the West Indies at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Sunday.
This significant contribution earned him the Player of the Match accolade and marked several noteworthy milestones in his career.
Root’s exceptional batting was pivotal in England’s successful chase of a 309-run target, overcoming a challenging phase where they were at 133 for 5.
As the Number three batsman, the former captain stabilized the innings with remarkable composure, forming a vital partnership with Will Jacks to guide England to victory in the 49th over.
Consequently, Root exceeded Eoin Morgan’s previous record of 6,957 ODI runs, establishing himself as England’s leading run-scorer in ODI history.
Reaching the 7,000-run milestone also positioned him among the quickest globally to achieve this feat, accomplishing it in just 168 innings—the fifth fastest overall.
Root’s ODI journey commenced in January 2013. Despite intermittent appearances between 2020 and 2022, where he participated in only 15 matches, he has since played in 21 ODIs, marking a significant resurgence.
His unbeaten 166 is now recognized as the fifth-highest individual score by an English player in ODIs, following closely behind Robin Smith’s 167 against Australia in 1993.
Ben Stokes remains at the forefront with a score of 182 against New Zealand in 2023.
Furthermore, Root’s innings set a new standard for the highest individual score for England against the West Indies, surpassing Jos Buttler’s 150 achieved in 2019.
Root’s century marked his 12th while batting at No. 3—equaling Brian Lara—and elevated his average in that position to an impressive 51.65. With 18 ODI centuries to his name, he holds the record for the most centuries by an England batter.
In chase situations, Root continues to be a reliable player for England, now holding the record for the most ODI centuries (nine) in chases, surpassing Jason Roy’s previous record of eight.
