ISLAMABADPrime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday launched a nationwide anti-polio campaign, personally administering polio drops to children under the age of five. The prime minister reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to eliminate polio from Pakistan.

During the launch ceremony, Prime Minister Sharif expressed concern over the rise in polio cases, noting that 60 new cases had been reported this year. However, he reassured the public that collaborative efforts from both the federal and provincial governments would successfully tackle this issue.

“I especially thank the government of Saudi Arabia and Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman for their generous contribution to the eradication of polio, not only in Pakistan but also in Afghanistan,” Sharif said.

He also extended his gratitude to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Health Organization (WHO) for their continuing support in the fight against polio.

A Unified Effort

The campaign, spearheaded by Dr. Ayesha Raza Farooq and Dr. Bharat, will mobilize over 400,000 workers across 143 districts to ensure that no child is left unvaccinated. Sharif emphasized the importance of community participation, urging parents to actively engage in safeguarding their children from the crippling disease.

Acknowledging Polio Workers’ Dedication

The prime minister recognized the dedication of polio workers, acknowledging their bravery in challenging environments. He praised security forces for their vital role in protecting vaccination teams during their outreach efforts. “The campaign will not stop until polio is eradicated once and for all,” he stated.

Dr. Ayesha Raza Farooq, the prime minister’s focal person for the anti-polio drive, thanked Prime Minister Sharif for his unwavering support. She highlighted that his involvement in the campaign underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring a healthier future for Pakistan’s children.
