Wasim Akram Criticizes Qalandars’ Fielding After Dropped Catches

LAHORE: Former Pakistan cricket legend Wasim Akram voiced his strong disapproval of the Lahore Qalandars’ fielding mishaps during their PSL 10 Eliminator match against the Karachi Kings at Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday.

Akram’s criticism arose following dropped catches by Qalandars’ fielders, including Haris Rauf and Mohammad Naeem, who gave David Warner multiple opportunities by failing to secure simple catches.

During the live broadcast, the former Pakistan captain expressed his displeasure, stating, “What is happening? This is unacceptable. The fielding isn’t even at the standard of club cricket. There are misfields and weak throws. They appear sluggish, unenthusiastic, and careless.”

Despite the subpar fielding, a combined bowling performance coupled with a rapid half-century from Abdullah Shafique propelled the Lahore Qalandars to a convincing six-wicket triumph against their rivals, the Karachi Kings, eliminating them from the competition.

The Qalandars successfully chased down a challenging target of 191 runs, losing only four wickets and securing the victory with eight balls remaining.

Openers Fakhar Zaman and Mohammad Naeem provided a steady start for the home side, contributing 42 runs for the opening partnership before Naeem was dismissed by Hasan Ali in the fifth over. He scored 14 runs from 12 balls, which included one four and a six.

Fakhar maintained the momentum with an aggressive 47 off 28 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes. Following his dismissal, Abdullah Shafique took command of the chase, delivering a superb 65 off 35 balls, comprised of three fours and five sixes.

Shafique also formed a crucial 83-run partnership for the third wicket with Kusal Perera, who added a valuable 30 from 24 balls.

After choosing to bat first in the crucial match, the Kings posted 190/8 in 20 overs.

Captain David Warner led the Kings’ batting performance, scoring 75 runs from 52 balls, including eight fours and three sixes.

With this win, Lahore Qalandars proceed to face the current champions, Islamabad United, in Eliminator 2, which is scheduled for Friday at the same venue.

The victor of that contest will move on to the Grand Final against the Quetta Gladiators on May 25.
