Kashif Aims to Solidify Test Spot Through County Cricket

LONDON: Pakistani fast bowler Kashif Ali is optimistic that his notable first-class performances, coupled with his current time with Kent, an English county team, will assist him in securing a consistent position in Pakistan’s Test squad.

The 30-year-old bowler, who debuted in Tests against the West Indies at home and is now playing county cricket in England for the first time, describes this period as the most rewarding of his life, both professionally and personally.

Kashif spoke with a media outlet at Lord’s Cricket Ground following a match between Kent CCC and Middlesex CCC, reflecting on his experiences.

“Alhamdulillah, this year has been truly remarkable,” Kashif stated. “I debuted in a Test match and soon after received the chance to represent Kent. It’s challenging to adapt to new environments, including the weather, pitches, and overall setting, but I’m pleased with my progress thus far.”

Kashif, a reliable performer in Pakistan’s domestic cricket scene, sees county cricket as a significant advancement in his career. He has claimed 11 wickets in the five County Championship games he has participated in so far.

“The infrastructure, organization, and support offered here are unparalleled,” he commented. “While cricket is universal, the professional atmosphere here truly enables optimal performance.”

Kashif attributes his smooth transition into county cricket to Kent’s head coach, Adam Hollioake, a former member of Pakistan’s coaching staff.

“He is very supportive and approachable. We bonded quickly,” Kashif mentioned.

Playing at Lord’s, often called the “Home of Cricket,” was a dream realized for the Rawalpindi-born bowler.

“Growing up in Rawalpindi, I often heard about Lord’s and imagined what it would be like. Playing here felt unreal. It genuinely feels like the heart of cricket, from the spectators and ambiance to the exceptional refreshments during breaks,” he added with a smile.

Earlier in the year, Kashif made his Test debut in Multan, where he was chosen as the only fast bowler in Pakistan’s Test XI against the West Indies.

“Representing Pakistan in Test cricket was a great honor — a moment of pride for my loved ones. It’s a feeling beyond words,” he expressed.

In addition to cricket accomplishments, 2024 holds personal significance for Kashif, as he welcomed his daughter into the world.

“My daughter was born shortly before my Test debut, and my life has been wonderfully transformed since then. She inspires and motivates me. I believe she has brought me luck,” he shared.

Kashif’s cricket journey started in 2010, influenced by Shoaib Akhtar, another Rawalpindi native and legendary bowler.

“Watching Shoaib Bhai instilled in me a passion for fast bowling. His enthusiasm, drive, and commitment left a lasting impression,” he recalled.

Looking forward, Kashif is dedicated to maintaining his performance and consistency to solidify his position in the national team.

“InshaAllah, my objective is to continue performing well and remain a strong contender. Consistency is crucial for maintaining your position,” he emphasized.

With a promising county season underway and the backing of his family, coaches, and mentors, Kashif Ali is establishing himself in first-class cricket and building a solid base for a potentially successful international career.
