Real Madrid’s Late Goal Delays Barcelona’s LaLiga Title

MADRID: A last-gasp goal from Jacobo Ramón secured a 2-1 victory for Real Madrid against Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, postponing Barcelona’s expected LaLiga title celebration.

Barcelona was on the verge of clinching the title without playing, but Real Madrid’s late triumph has extended the wait, at least temporarily.

Mallorca initially took the lead in the 11th minute when Martin Valjent delivered a precise low shot from the right side of the penalty area, stunning the home supporters.

Despite dominating possession and generating numerous scoring opportunities, Real Madrid trailed 1-0 at halftime. Mallorca’s goalkeeper, Leo Román, made a string of impressive saves, thwarting the home side who enjoyed 72% of the ball possession.

In the 68th minute, Kylian Mbappé equalized for Real Madrid, combining effectively with Luka Modrić before calmly slotting the ball home to make it 1-1.

As the match approached full time, Real Madrid’s persistence finally paid dividends. A defensive error by Mallorca allowed Jacobo Ramón to volley the ball in from close range, securing all three points for the home team.

“Mallorca is a strong team. They scored early and then defended deeply. We created several chances, their goalkeeper performed excellently, but ultimately, we managed to secure the win,” Ramón stated. “This moment is beyond words; it’s a lifelong dream. I want to wear this shirt forever, and there’s no better way to celebrate my first goal.”

Barcelona remains four points ahead with three matches remaining and could secure the title on Thursday when they face Espanyol.

Real Madrid’s manager, Carlo Ancelotti, is anticipated to conclude the season without winning a major trophy. Following the season’s end, he is expected to assume the role of Brazil’s national team coach, with Xabi Alonso being considered as his replacement at Real Madrid.
