PCB to Dismiss Five Mentors

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has resolved to relieve five prominent mentors of their duties with domestic teams and the Champions Cup.

Sources indicate that this decision was made under the guidance of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, signaling a revised strategy in anticipation of crucial domestic and international competitions.

The PCB has finalized intentions to separate from former cricketers Saqlain Mushtaq, Waqar Younis, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shoaib Malik, and Sarfaraz Ahmed. These individuals were designated last year as mentors for the Champions Cup, with three-year contracts.

Although the formal announcement is still pending, sources affirm that the determination has already been made internally.

Shoaib Malik submitted his resignation a fortnight ago, voluntarily resigning ahead of the board’s conclusive choice. The remaining four mentors are anticipated to be formally notified imminently, thereby concluding what was initially conceived as a long-term mentorship endeavor.

The justifications for this action have not been revealed, and the PCB has yet to issue an official statement concerning the matter.

It is important to note that on August 26, 2024, the PCB disclosed the appointments of these five former players through a competitive and transparent procedure.

Each mentor was tasked with leading a domestic team in the Champions Cup and was reportedly offered a monthly remuneration of Rs 5 million.

In related news, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi appointed Mike Hesson as the new head coach of the Pakistan national team on Tuesday, while Aqib Javed was named Director of the High-Performance Centre.
