Gavaskar’s Remarks on Asia Cup 2025 Spark Criticism
Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian cricket legend, has drawn criticism following his remarks concerning Pakistan’s potential participation in the 2025 Asia Cup. Several former Pakistani cricketers, including Javed Miandad, have expressed their dismay.
Gavaskar’s comments, made during an interview, addressed Pakistan’s involvement in the 2025 Asia Cup and the future structure of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). He implied that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) typically aligns with the Indian government’s stance, which might affect Pakistan’s participation due to existing political tensions.
Gavaskar stated, “The BCCI’s position has always mirrored the Indian government’s directives. Unless the situation changes, I doubt Pakistan will participate in the Asia Cup.”
He also speculated about the ACC’s future, suggesting, “The Asian Cricket Council might be dissolved. We could see a tri-series or a four-nation tournament instead. The future depends on upcoming developments.”
Javed Miandad responded to these comments with disbelief, saying, “I am shocked by Sunny bhai’s statement.”
He continued, “He is typically respectful and apolitical.”
Iqbal Qasim initially questioned whether Gavaskar had been misquoted, adding, “Gavaskar is a respected figure on both sides. Politics and sports should remain separate.”
Basit Ali was more critical, describing Gavaskar’s statements as “baseless” and emphasizing the need for evidence. He urged that “Cricket should be kept free from political conflicts until investigations are complete.”
The 17th edition of the Asia Cup is scheduled for September 2025.
The tournament will include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, who have automatically qualified as full ACC members. Hong Kong, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates secured their places by finishing in the top three at the 2024 ACC Men’s Premier Cup.
