Rabada Acknowledges Failed Drug Test, Explaining IPL Exit

Prominent South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada admitted Saturday to failing a drug test, which he cited as the reason for his unexpected departure from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 midway through the season.

Rabada, who holds the second position in the ICC Men’s Test bowling rankings, had previously stated that he was returning to South Africa for an ‘important personal reason’ after participating in just a pair of matches for Gujarat Titans.

The Titans had earlier verified the exit of the right-arm bowler but did not provide additional details regarding his potential return.

According to recent developments, the South African cricketer revealed that his early departure from the lucrative league resulted from a positive test for a recreational drug.

Kagiso Rabada issued a statement in which he apologized for the failed drug test and conveyed his deep regret.

While the 29-year-old expressed his determination to quickly resume his career, his participation in the World Test Championship (WTC) remains doubtful due to the drug test result.

“I am deeply sorry to all those I have disappointed,” he stated in a release by the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), the players’ union of the nation.

“I will never take playing cricket for granted. This privilege is far greater than myself; it transcends my personal ambitions.

“I am currently under provisional suspension and eagerly anticipate my return to the sport I am passionate about.

“I could not have navigated this alone. I extend my gratitude to my agent, Cricket South Africa (CSA), and Gujarat Titans for their support. I also thank SACA and my legal team for their advice and guidance. Most importantly, I thank my friends and family for their understanding and affection.

“Looking ahead, this incident will not define me. I will continue my dedication to hard work and playing with enthusiasm and commitment to my craft.”
