Leaders Affirm Commitment to Press Freedom in Pakistan
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have jointly reaffirmed their dedication to preserving and advancing a free and accountable press within Pakistan.
In separate statements released on World Press Freedom Day, both leaders expressed their respect for media professionals globally, including those in Pakistan, acknowledging their hard work and the sacrifices they’ve made in the pursuit of truth.
President Zardari emphasized the crucial role of the media in fostering open discussions, drawing attention to important social, economic, and ecological issues, exposing corruption, and advocating for those who are marginalized.
He paid tribute to the journalists who have tragically lost their lives while seeking to report the truth, particularly in dangerous conflict areas such as Gaza and Palestine, recognizing their unwavering courage and commitment as a source of inspiration.
“Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees the right to freedom of expression and a free press, subject to certain restrictions,” he stated. “The media plays an essential role in promoting dialogue, highlighting issues of social, economic, and environmental significance, uncovering corruption, and advocating for the marginalized.”
President Zardari noted, “We have implemented several measures to safeguard and support journalists, but further actions are required to ensure they have a safe, secure, and supportive environment in which to operate.”
He further emphasized the urgent need for a culture where journalists can carry out their work without the threat of fear or harassment. The President encouraged the media to maintain the highest standards of journalistic integrity, accuracy, and professional conduct.
“Given the prevalence of fake news, misinformation, and sensationalism that erode public trust, the media’s responsibility has grown even more significant,” he observed.
Additionally, he highlighted the media’s vital function in increasing public understanding of citizens’ rights and obligations, addressing socio-economic concerns, promoting civic knowledge, and encouraging active public involvement in the democratic process, noting that the press should act as a link between the public and government bodies, giving voice to those who are often unheard.
“On this day, let us renew our pledge to protect and promote press freedom as a fundamental component of our democracy,” he urged.
“I hope the government will persist in its efforts to protect press freedoms and ensure the safety, dignity, and independence of journalists. I am also hopeful that our media will continue to play its role in educating and informing our nation on issues of national and global significance,” the President concluded.
PM Shehbaz commented, “Protecting freedom of expression requires ensuring that the media is not misused for spreading falsehoods, fake news, propaganda, foreign agendas, or political interests.”
The Prime Minister acknowledged the responsible conduct of Pakistan’s media in countering India’s recent water aggression and groundless accusations with factual information and truth.
