Poirier Expresses Surprise at Pimblett’s Decisive Victory Over Chandler

Dustin Poirier, a celebrated figure in mixed martial arts and a prominent competitor in both the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight and lightweight divisions, believes Paddy Pimblett possesses the potential to seize the championship if he maintains his current trajectory.

Pimblett’s triumph over Michael Chandler at UFC 314 has garnered significant attention.

Prior to the contest, numerous analysts underestimated Pimblett’s chances; however, Pimblett not only validated his prowess within the lightweight category but also demonstrated his capacity for future advancement.

Pimblett currently boasts a seven-fight winning streak, with five victories achieved by knockout.

In response to Pimblett’s dominant performance, Poirier admitted his initial surprise and forecasted a promising future for the British competitor.

“[I was surprised] of course. I genuinely anticipated Chandler defeating [Pimblett],” Poirier stated.

“However, I was mistaken. Pimblett is truly exceptional… Indeed, should he maintain unwavering belief, dedicate himself through diligent effort, and sustain his present course, he is capable of becoming [champion].”

The 36-year-old American fighter, contemplating one final appearance in his UFC tenure, expressed interest in a potential match against Pimblett, but acknowledged the impracticality of such an encounter at this juncture in his career.

“He has transitioned from prospect to contender,” Poirier remarked.

“He now demands serious consideration. While the Chandler bout was significant, his forthcoming match necessitates a substantial opponent, such as Mateusz Gamrot, Arman Tsarukyan, or Charles Oliveira.”

The British fighter is now officially ranked eighth within the lightweight division and could vie for the 155-pound title with one more pivotal victory.
