Electronic Payment Systems Disrupted in Ukraine
Early Saturday, Ukraine experienced disruptions in electronic payment systems at various locations, including post offices, restaurants, and the metro. Officials and eyewitnesses confirmed the outages.
While Ukraine has previously accused Russia of cyberattacks, the cause of Saturday’s disruptions remains unclear, with no immediate indication of hostile action.
Kyiv city authorities attributed the payment system failures in the capital’s metro to a technical malfunction at the bank responsible for operating the system.
At a McDonald’s in central Kyiv, employees informed patrons that electronic payment terminals were not functioning, and only cash payments were being accepted.
Oleksandr Fediyenko, a member of the Ukrainian parliament’s National Security Committee, shared a video on his Telegram account from a post office, where he was informed that their system was down across the country.
“It’s a technical issue, not a cyberattack,” he stated on his Telegram account.
Reporters noted that certain commercial banking applications were not operational, and the Diya app, which allows citizens to access government services online, was also affected.
