Arshdeep Singh Breaks Record as Top Wicket-Taker for Punjab Kings
Indian pace bowler Arshdeep Singh achieved a significant milestone on Friday, becoming the highest wicket-taker for Punjab Kings in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Arshdeep surpassed the previous record during the IPL 2025 match between Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, securing the top position with a single wicket.
He made an immediate impact by dismissing Phil Salt on the third delivery of the game, which was shortened to 14 overs per side due to weather.
This marked Arshdeep’s 72nd IPL match for Punjab Kings, overtaking Piyush Chawla, who previously held the record with 84 wickets in 87 matches for the team.
Top Wicket-Takers for Punjab Kings:
- Arshdeep Singh – 85 wickets in 72 matches
- Piyush Chawla – 84 wickets in 87 matches
- Sandeep Sharma – 73 wickets in 61 matches
- Axar Patel – 68 wickets in 61 matches
- Mohammad Shami – 58 wickets in 42 matches
His IPL journey commenced in 2019, where he participated in three matches and claimed three wickets. Since then, he has developed into one of Punjab Kings’ most dependable bowlers.
Arshdeep has showcased excellent form this season, securing vital wickets for his team.
He claimed two wickets against Gujarat Titans on March 25, followed by three wickets against Lucknow Super Giants at Ekana Stadium on April 1. Additionally, he took one wicket in a match against Rajasthan Royals in Mullanpur on April 5.
Despite going without a wicket in Punjab Kings’ fourth match against Chennai Super Kings, which his team won by 18 runs in Mullanpur on April 8, Arshdeep recovered in the fifth match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, dismissing one batter for 37 runs.
In his most recent appearance against Kolkata Knight Riders, he concluded with impressive stats of 1 for 11 in three overs, maintaining his consistent performance with the ball.
Punjab Kings retained Arshdeep before the IPL 2022 auctions, and since then, his wicket count has consistently increased, with 10 wickets in 2022, 17 wickets in 2023, and 19 wickets in 2024.
During the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings successfully reached the target of 99 runs in 12.1 overs, securing a five-wicket victory. Nehal Wadhera played a pivotal role in the chase, scoring 33 runs off just 19 balls, including three sixes and four fours.
Despite the commendable efforts of Josh Hazelwood (3 wickets) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2 wickets), Royal Challengers Bangalore were unable to prevent Punjab Kings from achieving victory in this low-scoring game.
