Energy Minister Awais Leghari has announced that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will soon deliver “good news” regarding a reduction in electricity prices. Addressing the media on March 25, 2025, Leghari dismissed claims suggesting that electricity prices would not be lowered, labeling such reports as inaccurate.
Leghari emphasized the government’s dedication to fulfilling its commitments, contrasting its approach with that of previous administrations. He highlighted that the timing of the price reduction would be strategically chosen to maximize its impact.
This announcement follows the government’s recent decision to maintain current petroleum product prices despite favorable international market conditions. Instead of reducing fuel prices, the government opted to increase taxes on petroleum products by Rs10 per liter, aiming to utilize the financial margin to lower electricity tariffs. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has indicated that a comprehensive package to reduce electricity rates is in development and will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik also reiterated the government’s commitment to providing substantial relief to electricity consumers, noting that the forthcoming reduction in electricity prices is part of a long-term strategy rather than a temporary measure.
These developments reflect the government’s proactive approach to addressing energy costs and alleviating the financial burden on consumers.
