Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has extended an invitation to parliamentary leaders and heads of political parties for a crucial briefing on the current regional situation. This meeting, scheduled for Wednesday at 11:30 am, will address both domestic and regional security concerns. Key discussion points will include Pakistan’s response to recent provocative actions by the Afghan Taliban regime along the border and the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Adviser to the Prime Minister, Rana Sanaullah, conveyed the invitation, emphasizing the need for views that transcend partisan politics. He noted that opposition leaders would consult with their colleagues before offering input, and stressed that no demands should be attached to the meeting.
In response, the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, suggested that the briefing should encompass the entire parliament, not just a select group of members. He stated that a decision on their participation would be provided by Wednesday morning after internal consultations, citing the dangerous regional developments that necessitate full parliamentary awareness.
The briefing takes place amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East, following joint strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran. These military actions, reportedly aimed at dismantling Iran’s naval and missile capabilities, have added another layer of complexity to the region’s security landscape.
Concurrently, Pakistan is actively addressing cross-border terrorism originating from Afghanistan. The Pakistan Armed Forces are engaged in ongoing ground and aerial operations, codenamed ‘Operation Ghazab lil-Haq,’ targeting Afghan Taliban elements and militants identified as ‘Fitna al-Khawarij’ involved in cross-border incursions. The operation was initiated on February 27 after unprovoked firing by Afghan Taliban fighters along the border.
Reports indicate significant success in these operations, with the killing of 464 Afghan Taliban fighters and injuries to over 660. Furthermore, Pakistani forces have reportedly destroyed 188 Afghan Taliban checkposts and captured 31.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar confirmed that the prime minister will provide an in-camera briefing during the meeting, with Sanaullah tasked with extending the invitations to the political party heads.
