Islamabad Tragedy: Blast Targets Worshippers During Friday Prayer

A suicide blast shook Islamabad on Friday, leaving the nation in mourning. The attack struck Imambargah Khadijah al-Kubra in Tarlai during Friday prayers, killing at least 31 people and injuring 169 others. Eyewitnesses reported that the bomber opened fire before detonating explosives inside the mosque, causing chaos and devastation.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene, transferring victims to nearby hospitals. Authorities immediately imposed an emergency at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Polyclinic, and CDA Hospital. Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal confirmed that doctors and staff were placed on high alert, with all operating theatres functional and blood supplies secured.

Officials revealed that the bomber had traveled to Afghanistan multiple times, raising suspicions of foreign involvement. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif pointed to possible links with India and Afghanistan, vowing that Pakistan would respond firmly to such brutality. Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry added that the attacker was identified as a 32-year-old from Peshawar, whose identity was verified through NADRA records.

The tragedy prompted strong condemnation across the country. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow, calling the attack a crime against humanity. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to ensure immediate medical care for the injured and ordered a thorough investigation to bring perpetrators to justice.

Provincial governments also responded with solemn gestures. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz canceled Basant-related activities, while Sindh’s leadership suspended cultural programs in solidarity with victims’ families. Leaders across political and religious spectrums united in condemning the attack, labeling it a cowardly assault on worshippers and humanity itself.

The blast has reignited concerns about Pakistan’s security challenges, especially the targeting of places of worship. As investigations continue, the nation stands in grief, demanding accountability and stronger measures to protect innocent lives.
