Pakistan Expands Cancer Care with New PAEC Facility
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has commended the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) for its remarkable contributions to healthcare, particularly in cancer treatment. Speaking at the inauguration of the Kashmir Institute of Nuclear Medicine, Oncology and Radiotherapy (KINOR) in Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, he described PAEC’s work as a noble service to humanity.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of providing modern treatment facilities closer to patients’ homes. He noted that many individuals from remote areas face significant challenges traveling long distances for medical care. The establishment of KINOR is expected to ease this burden by offering advanced oncology and radiotherapy services locally.
Highlighting his personal experience as a cancer survivor, Shehbaz Sharif urged authorities to further strengthen healthcare support for patients, especially those struggling with financial and logistical difficulties. His remarks underscored the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality medical services across Pakistan.
PAEC Chairman Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar shared that the commission currently operates 20 cancer treatment centers nationwide, handling nearly 80% of patients. With KINOR now added as the 21st center, Pakistan’s capacity to deliver specialized care has significantly increased.
The Prime Minister also stressed the urgent need for early screening and awareness, noting that nearly 60% of cancer patients in Pakistan are diagnosed at advanced stages. International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi praised Pakistan’s efforts, recognizing the government and PAEC for expanding access to modern cancer treatment.
During his visit, Shehbaz Sharif toured hospital departments to review facilities and reiterated his resolve to continue supporting initiatives that provide hope and relief to patients. The inauguration of KINOR marks a major step forward in Pakistan’s healthcare journey, reflecting both compassion and innovation in service to humanity.
