Markram Sees Spin Challenge as ‘Great Opportunity’ for South Africa Against Pakistan

LAHORE: Stand-in captain of South Africa, Aiden Markram, stated that Pakistan was well within their rights to prepare pitches favouring spin for their upcoming two-match Test series. The series is scheduled to commence at the Gaddafi Stadium this Sunday.

Following their World Test Championship (WTC) victory in June, the Proteas are preparing to begin their campaign for the 2025-27 cycle. Their first challenge will be an away series against Pakistan. It is anticipated that spin bowling will play a significant role, with Pakistan expected to continue their strategy of preparing turning pitches.

Markram, who will lead the team in the absence of the injured Temba Bavuma, expressed his readiness for the spin challenge. However, he also acknowledged that his team has not had extensive experience in such conditions.

“We are naturally anticipating the challenges that Pakistan will present, particularly with spin-friendly pitches, as we expect,” Markram mentioned during the pre-series press conference.

“Our team hasn’t faced these conditions very often, so this presents an exciting and significant chance for us to adapt and succeed. We are focusing intensely on this aspect, aiming to put together five solid days of cricket in the first Test.”

“We are anticipating spin-friendly conditions, similar to what occurred in the series against England. Pakistan will undoubtedly aim to win, which is entirely acceptable, and we are eager for this challenge,” he added.

“We plan to inspect the pitch again later today to gain a better understanding before making our final decisions for tomorrow.”

The Proteas will be without their regular captain, Temba Bavuma, who has been sidelined since the ODI series against England last month. Markram acknowledged that their ‘leader’ would be missed.

“We will certainly miss Temba considerably. He is our leader, and his importance is well-recognized,” Markram commented.

Markram further emphasized the importance of dismissing star batter Babar Azam, noting that their bowlers would strategize to get him out.

“Babar needs no introduction. Taking Babar’s wicket will be crucial for us, and our bowlers will concentrate on achieving that,” Markram concluded.
