Mahrez Announces 2026 World Cup Will Be His Last

Algeria’s captain, Riyad Mahrez, declared on Friday that the FIFA World Cup 2026 will mark his final appearance in a major tournament, following Algeria’s qualification for their fifth global event.

The 34-year-old winger played a pivotal role in Algeria’s 3-0 victory over Somalia. He scored a goal and set up two others, securing their place at the top of Group G and guaranteeing their participation in the finals hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico next year.

In the wake of this crucial win, Mahrez stated that the upcoming World Cup would be his last international showing, humorously noting that he isn’t Cristiano Ronaldo, who continues to perform at a high level at 40 years old.

“This will be my last World Cup. I’m not Ronaldo (40),” Mahrez commented.

“I’ll dedicate everything I have to representing Algeria in the best possible manner.”

Mahrez, who will turn 35 in February, has played 106 times for Algeria, scoring 33 goals. He noted the team’s dominance in their recent match and highlighted their focus on the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

Mahrez also conveyed his appreciation to his teammates, the coach, and the fans for their steadfast support.

“I thank God for this important win,” he stated.

“I’m delighted to have contributed with two assists, but the most crucial aspect is that we’ve officially qualified.”

Algeria has now qualified for the World Cup five times, previously appearing in 1982, 1986, 2010, and 2014. Their best performance was in 2014 in Brazil, where they reached the round of 16 before losing to eventual champions Germany in extra time.
