Ratcliffe Gives Amorim Three Years to Prove Worth at Manchester United
Manchester United’s co-owner, Jim Ratcliffe, announced on Wednesday his willingness to grant Ruben Amorim a three-year period to demonstrate his capabilities at Old Trafford.
Amorim’s appointment by Ratcliffe occurred last November, subsequent to Erik ten Hag’s departure. However, the Portuguese manager has faced challenges in steering United towards consistent victories, securing only 10 wins in his 34 Premier League games.
Last season marked United’s poorest performance, concluding in 15th place, a low not seen since their relegation in the 1973–74 season.
Additionally, Amorim’s squad suffered a defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, resulting in their absence from European competitions this season.
Furthermore, they were eliminated from the League Cup by Grimsby Town, a League Two team, in August 2025.
Ratcliffe has publicly voiced his support for Amorim, releasing a statement drawing parallels between the Portuguese coach and Sir Alex Ferguson, who also encountered difficulties in his initial years.
“I recall the demands for Alex Ferguson’s dismissal within his first couple of years,” Ratcliffe noted.
“Consider (Mikel) Arteta at Arsenal. He experienced a tough period during his initial years.”
“Ultimately, we are driven by results, but patience is essential, and we must look beyond immediate outcomes. There are numerous positive aspects at Manchester United. We need to be patient and adhere to our long-term strategy. It’s not an instant transformation.”
“Ruben needs to prove his coaching prowess over a three-year span.”
