Henderson Defends England Selection, Cites Performance Over Reputation
Jordan Henderson, the former Liverpool captain, has refuted claims that his role in the England squad is merely that of a ‘cheerleader.’ He asserts that his selection is predicated on his on-field contributions and not on past achievements.
The 35-year-old midfielder, now with Brentford after stints at Ajax and in Saudi Arabia, was unexpectedly recalled by England’s manager and has consistently been included in the squad since. This decision has drawn scrutiny, with some suggesting his leadership qualities, instead of recent form, are the reason for his place.
However, the former Liverpool captain, who led the Reds to their first Premier League title, strongly denied these assertions.
“I don’t feel the need to address such claims. I believe I have consistently demonstrated my capabilities for England over the years. My performance level remains high. Perceptions outside the team are beyond my control,” Henderson remarked.
He further clarified that his selection is justified by his input and commitment, both during training sessions and matches.
“If you doubt my contribution, ask my teammates if I merely act as a cheerleader. I doubt one of Europe’s premier managers would select me solely for that purpose. I am here to contribute effectively, both in training and during games. My primary objective is to support the team. The rest simply reflects my personality,” he elaborated.
Henderson, who was absent from Euro 2024 following his controversial move to Saudi Arabia, acknowledged that he might reconsider some decisions in retrospect but dismissed the notion that his time in the Middle East led to his exclusion.
“During my time in Saudi Arabia, I was part of every camp leading up to the Euros, so I don’t believe that was the primary reason. Looking back, perhaps I would have made alternative choices. I acted with the best intentions,” the former captain explained.
Currently focused on securing a spot for next summer’s World Cup, he stated that his return to the Premier League was motivated by a strong desire to compete at the highest level.
“I missed the intensity and atmosphere of the Premier League; for me, it’s the best league globally. The chance to return was the reason behind my decision,” Jordan concluded.
