Arsenal Urged to Elevate Performance After Winless Games
Following a 2-1 defeat to OL Lyonnais in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Arsenal forward Alessia Russo acknowledged the team is experiencing a slump. The match took place at Meadow Park on Tuesday.
Russo scored early in the seventh minute, but defensive errors enabled Melchie Dumornay to score twice before halftime, leading Lyon to a comeback victory.
This outcome has extended Arsenal’s winless run to four games, matching their longest such streak in the Women’s Super League era.
In a post-game discussion, the 26-year-old conveyed that the loss wouldn’t disrupt their goals, while underlining the need to improve their play.
“We’re disappointed not to secure the win. Currently, we find ourselves in a slight dip, and we recognize that,” Russo stated.
“Firstly, we need to assess our own performances and identify areas for improvement. This applies across the entire field,” she further commented.
Despite the setback, the England international noted some encouraging aspects of the game.
“There were some very positive moments, which we will build on,” Russo mentioned.
Recognizing the difficulties of defending a title, she highlighted the squad’s resilience.
“Winning a trophy ignites a desire for more victories because the feeling is unmatched. Although tonight’s result was unfavorable, we will continue to strive,” Russo expressed.
“We must remain grounded, avoiding excessive elation or despair. Continuous self-improvement is essential because we dislike losing and facing situations like this,” she concluded.
Arsenal’s next challenge is against Benfica on October 16 in the Champions League, where they aim to rediscover their winning form.
