Alisson Becker to Miss Several Weeks Due to Hamstring Injury
LIVERPOOL: Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, announced on Friday that goalkeeper Alisson Becker will be out of action for several weeks. This follows a hamstring injury he sustained during Tuesday’s 1-0 loss to Galatasaray.
The injury happened when Alisson sprinted back to make a save against Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. He was subsequently taken off the field in the 56th minute of the match.
Consequently, Alisson will be absent for Saturday’s Premier League match against Chelsea. Giorgi Mamardashvili, the Georgian international who joined Liverpool in the summer of 2024 after a loan spell at Valencia last season, is slated to replace Alisson as goalkeeper.
Slot also provided updates regarding winger Federico Chiesa and striker Hugo Ekitike. Despite both being substituted during the Galatasaray game, they might be available to play against Chelsea.
Chiesa was absent from the Istanbul trip due to a minor injury sustained during last weekend’s defeat to Crystal Palace. Ekitike, meanwhile, received a call-up to the France squad by coach Didier Deschamps.
During Friday’s press conference, Slot clarified that Alisson would not be joining Brazil’s national team for their forthcoming matches.
“Alisson will not be in the squad tomorrow, and he will also not travel to Brazil for international duty,” Slot stated. “Hugo will participate in training again today, and we will assess his condition. The same applies to Federico.”
Despite experiencing consecutive defeats, only the second instance during Slot’s management, Liverpool still leads the Premier League with a two-point advantage.
Arsenal has the opportunity to narrow the gap depending on the outcomes of Saturday’s games. Slot emphasized the team’s resilience and highlighted the need for enhancement beyond relying solely on chance and set-pieces.
