Glenn Maxwell Ruled Out of T20I Series Due to Fractured Wrist

MOUNT MAUNGANUI: The Australian cricket team has suffered another setback as Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the T20I series against New Zealand. This follows an unfortunate incident where he sustained a fractured right wrist.

The incident occurred when Maxwell was struck by a forceful straight drive from Mitchell Owen during a net session while he was bowling. Consequently, he has been sent back home for further medical evaluation.

Medical Assessment and Expected Recovery

Maxwell is scheduled to consult with a specialist in the coming days. Medical personnel are optimistic about a swift recovery. However, his participation in the five-match home T20I series against India, set to commence on October 29, remains uncertain.

Currently, the anticipated timeline for his return is projected to coincide with the start of the Big Bash League in mid-December, contingent upon receiving medical clearance. This setback adds to Maxwell’s recent history of injuries, including a broken leg in 2022.

Josh Philippe Called into the Squad

Sydney Sixers and New South Wales wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe has been included in the squad as a replacement. Philippe was under consideration for selection when Josh Inglis was sidelined due to a calf injury. However, Alex Carey was ultimately chosen ahead of him.

While Philippe isn’t a like-for-like replacement for Maxwell, his inclusion offers a backup option if Carey becomes unavailable. Maxwell had been considered as a potential temporary wicketkeeping solution.

Implications for Australia’s T20 World Cup Preparations

Maxwell’s absence introduces further challenges to Australia’s planning for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The upcoming eight matches are regarded as vital for solidifying their optimal XI, but the team is now missing two of its most adaptable batters in Inglis and Maxwell. Cameron Green is also unavailable, choosing to participate in Sheffield Shield cricket and prioritize preparations for the Ashes series.

Fast bowler Pat Cummins will be absent from both the New Zealand and India series due to a back injury. Nathan Ellis will also miss the New Zealand leg as he awaits the birth of his child.

Maxwell’s role as Australia’s fifth bowler was deemed critical, particularly against New Zealand’s left-handed batsmen.

His absence places greater responsibility on Matt Short, who is returning from injury, and Marcus Stoinis, who is rejoining the squad. Captain Mitch Marsh is unlikely to bowl anytime soon. Australia is also keen to further develop Travis Head’s offspin bowling option in the T20 format.

Philippe’s Recent Performances

Philippe’s recall marks his first T20I involvement since 2023. He recently made a strong impression with Australia A in India, recording scores of 123 not out, 39, and 50 in the unofficial Tests against India A.

However, his T20 form has been relatively modest, with only one half-century in the past two BBL seasons and a strike rate below 130 across 24 innings. His international T20 record is also underwhelming, with only two scores above 13 in 12 innings at a strike rate of 109.48.

Australia favored Carey over Philippe because of Carey’s ability to close out games in a reshuffled middle order. Philippe, on the other hand, has opened in half of his T20I innings and has rarely batted below No. 4, with no experience in that role since 2020.
