Pakistan Pushes for Global Accreditation in Drug Regulation

Pakistan is taking decisive steps to elevate its pharmaceutical oversight by fast-tracking international accreditation for its drug testing systems. In a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) was directed to accelerate reforms and secure the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Maturity Level 3 certification.

Upgrading the Central Drugs Laboratory

At the heart of this initiative is the modernization of the Central Drugs Laboratory, Pakistan’s premier facility for medicine testing. Officials briefed the minister on progress toward upgrading the lab to meet global standards. Once accredited, the lab will ensure rigorous oversight of medicines in the domestic market, aligning Pakistan’s drug safety protocols with international best practices.

Why WHO Maturity Level 3 Matters

Achieving WHO Maturity Level 3 signifies that a country’s regulatory authority has advanced systems for medicine registration, monitoring, pharmacovigilance, and quality assurance. Minister Kamal emphasized that this certification will not only safeguard public health but also enhance Pakistan’s global profile in pharmaceutical regulation.

Boosting Exports and International Partnerships

The minister highlighted that global accreditation would open doors for international collaboration, joint ventures, and expanded exports of Pakistani-manufactured medicines. It would also foster investor confidence and improve access to international markets.

A Clear Roadmap for Reform

Minister Kamal instructed DRAP and health ministry officials to prepare a detailed roadmap with clear timelines to achieve both the accreditation of the Central Drugs Laboratory and WHO Level 3 status without delay. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming DRAP into a world-class regulatory authority capable of meeting modern challenges.

Toward a Safer, More Reliable Health System

This push for global accreditation reflects Pakistan’s broader commitment to strengthening its health system. By aligning with international standards, the country aims to ensure the safety, quality, and efficacy of medicines—ultimately protecting citizens and positioning Pakistan as a trusted player in global health.
