The Aga Khan Maternal and Child Care Centre in Hyderabad has inaugurated a modern Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit NICU that will provide critical care for newborns in need of specialized treatment.
New Neonatal Lifeline in Hyderabad
This newly established NICU brings essential services closer to families in Hyderabad and surrounding districts. Until now, many newborns had to be transferred to Karachi or other cities for treatment, causing delays that could prove life threatening. With this facility operational, families will have access to life saving care within their own community.
Pakistan continues to face one of the highest newborn mortality rates in the world. More than 246,000 newborns die each year from preventable complications, which means hundreds of families lose infants every day. The Hyderabad NICU directly addresses this challenge by ensuring that critically ill babies receive timely and quality treatment near home.
Advanced Capabilities for Critical Care
The facility is equipped with advanced respiratory support systems, oxygen therapies, and specialized procedures for premature and high risk infants. These capabilities aim to reduce preventable newborn deaths and improve long term health outcomes.
Voices of Support
Local leaders and healthcare professionals welcomed the launch of the NICU. Hyderabad Mayor Kashif Ali Shoro highlighted the centre as a new ray of hope for countless families. Dr Farhat Abbas, CEO of AKU Health Services Pakistan, emphasized that newborns in Hyderabad now have access to the same high quality care available in major cities. Dr Mairaj Shah, COO of AKU Off Campus Hospitals, noted that the project reflects a strong commitment to advancing neonatal health services in the region.
Building on a Strong Foundation
The Aga Khan Maternal and Child Care Centre has been part of the Aga Khan University Hospital network since 2010 and holds SafeCare Level 5 certification, the highest international standard in patient safety and quality. The addition of this NICU strengthens its role as a centre of excellence for maternal and child healthcare.
Shared Commitment for Health
The inauguration ceremony was attended by civic leaders, senior officials, and healthcare professionals who expressed their shared commitment to improving maternal and child health services in Sindh. Their collective presence underscored how partnerships between civic leadership and healthcare institutions can strengthen public health systems.
