Naomi Osaka Condemns Jeļena Ostapenko’s Remarks at US Open
NEW YORK: Naomi Osaka has voiced strong disapproval of Jeļena Ostapenko’s comments towards American tennis player Taylor Townsend during a contentious moment at the US Open. Ostapenko allegedly used phrases such as “no education” and “no class”.
The disagreement arose on Wednesday following Townsend’s victory over Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, with a score of 7-5, 6-1, in their second-round match.
The situation intensified post-match as the two athletes exchanged words at the net, with Ostapenko pointing at Townsend repeatedly.
During her press conference, Townsend stated that Ostapenko would need to address whether her comments had “racial undertones.” Townsend also recounted a portion of the on-court exchange during her interview.
Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, criticized Ostapenko’s language, noting that such words are especially hurtful when directed at a Black athlete.
“It’s among the most damaging things one can say to a Black tennis player in a sport that’s predominantly white,” Osaka stated. “I know Taylor, and I am aware of her dedication and intellect. She is far from uneducated.”
Ostapenko later defended her actions on Instagram, explaining that she was upset because Townsend did not apologize after winning a point due to a net cord. While acknowledging such points is customary, it isn’t mandatory.
In a separate statement, Ostapenko asserted that she has “never been racist.” Nevertheless, Osaka insisted that Ostapenko’s choice of words was offensive and out of line given the circumstances.
