Giants Complete Sweep of Cubs with Walk-Off Win
SAN FRANCISCO: A clutch walk-off single by Jung Ho Lee in the ninth inning propelled the San Francisco Giants to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs, securing a three-game series sweep at Oracle Park on Thursday. Lee’s hit capped off a sequence of three straight one-out hits.
The game-winning rally commenced when Casey Schmitt singled against Cubs relief pitcher Daniel Palencia (1-4) with one out in the final frame, breaking a stalemate that had persisted since the sixth inning.
Schmitt then advanced into scoring position following a sharp single by Wilmer Flores to left-center field. Lee subsequently delivered a base hit to right field, allowing Schmitt to score easily and triggering celebrations among the hometown fans.
Giants relief pitcher Ryan Walker (5-4) secured the win by retiring the lone batter he faced in the top of the ninth.
Willy Adames, the Giants’ shortstop, fueled the early offense with two of the team’s four home runs.
After Chicago took an initial lead in the first, Adames responded with a two-run homer to tie the game at 1-1. When Michael Busch briefly gave the Cubs the lead again with a solo shot, Adames answered with another solo homer in the sixth, leveling the score at 3-3.
Cubs’ starting pitcher Shota Imanaga pitched seven innings, surrendering three runs on five hits, with one walk and five strikeouts. Giants’ ace Logan Webb mirrored his performance with seven strong innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, while recording seven strikeouts and issuing no walks.
With this series sweep, San Francisco has now won five consecutive games, all against Milwaukee and Chicago.
Looking forward, Giants pitcher Robbie Ray is scheduled to face the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, while Cubs right-hander Cade Horton is slated to take on the Colorado Rockies.
