Gordon Apologizes for Tackle in Newcastle’s Defeat

NEWCASTLE: Following Newcastle United’s narrow 3-2 Premier League loss to Liverpool at St James’ Park on Monday, forward Anthony Gordon publicly apologized to both his teammates and the club’s supporters for his actions.

The home side faced a significant setback just before halftime when Gordon was dismissed after a VAR review determined his challenge on Virgil van Dijk was reckless.

Despite playing with only 10 men, Newcastle rallied from a two-goal deficit. However, Liverpool’s 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha scored a dramatic goal in the 100th minute, securing the victory for the visiting team.

Gordon later used social media to express his regret, stating that the foul was unintentional.

“I sincerely want to apologise to my teammates and the fans. My intentions were genuine; I was simply trying to inject some intensity into the game, and I mistimed the tackle,” he stated.

He also issued a personal apology to Van Dijk, mentioning that they spoke after the match.

“I would never intentionally tackle someone like that. We talked afterwards, and he understood,” Gordon commented.

Ngumoha’s late goal not only clinched the win but also marked his place in the record books as Liverpool’s youngest-ever scorer in his Premier League debut.

The young player demonstrated remarkable composure, calmly finishing the play with his right foot well into stoppage time.

For Newcastle, this result leaves them without a win, having secured only one point from their initial matches. This is compounded by increasing injury concerns and uncertainty surrounding striker Alexander Isak’s future with the club.

Eddie Howe’s team will aim to recover when they face Leeds United on Saturday.
