Krejcikova Advances to Second Round, Faces Uchijima

Barbora Krejcikova, a two-time major champion, leveraged her experience to defeat the promising Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko in the first round of the US Open on Monday. Krejcikova secured a 6-3, 6-2 victory as she rediscovers her form after an injury-affected season.

Mboko faced a challenging draw, despite her impressive run to the title in Montreal where she triumphed over four major winners. Her US Open debut exposed her inexperience against the former Wimbledon and Roland Garros champion.

Czechia’s Krejcikova is set to compete against Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in the subsequent round.

Krejcikova, acknowledging Mboko’s Montreal performance, stated, “I witnessed her achievements in Montreal; it’s remarkable what she has accomplished and how exceptionally she performed.” Krejcikova clinched the match point by compelling her opponent into an error with a skillful backhand.

Krejcikova, who entered the tournament unseeded due to a several-month absence earlier in the year because of an injury, initiated the match by breaking the Canadian’s serve from the baseline in the opening game. She then efficiently defended both break points she encountered in the first set.

Mboko, playing a day before turning 19, conceded a break following a clumsy shot into the net during the second game of the subsequent set. Krejcikova sealed the victory as the Canadian committed two of her ten double faults during the match’s final game.

Krejcikova expressed her satisfaction with her serving performance, saying, “Extremely pleased with my serves today.” She only conceded five of her initial serve points.

She added, “I currently have a fantastic team, and I’m truly enjoying these past few weeks.”
