Punjab CM Orders Evacuation Amid Flood Warnings

LAHORE: Following warnings of potential flood conditions, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given firm instructions for the immediate removal of individuals residing near rivers to secure locations.

The Chief Minister’s directives came after the Ministry of Climate Change predicted substantial rainfall in the Gujranwala, Gujrat, and Lahore regions over the next two days, raising concerns about both river and urban flooding.

The ministry communicated via X, advising residents to maintain vigilance, adhere to safety measures, and stay prepared throughout this period.

Earlier today, India contacted Islamabad for the second time to caution about possible flooding in the Sutlej River.

In Okara, local authorities have announced a consistent increase in the Sutlej River’s water level, signalling the possibility of extremely high flooding.

CM Maryam stressed the need to utilize all resources to protect human lives. She mandated the immediate transfer of people from riverside and vulnerable areas to safe havens, as well as the swift relocation of livestock from affected rural areas.

The CM instructed that the flood situation in the Sutlej and other rivers be monitored continuously and diligently.

She mandated complete arrangements for shelter, sustenance, and healthcare for flood victims, alongside the immediate distribution of anti-venom medication in affected zones.

CM Maryam instructed the district administration, Rescue 1122, and all relevant departments in Kasur, Pakpattan, Taunsa Sharif, and other districts susceptible to flooding to be highly vigilant and execute their duties responsibly.

She explicitly stated that any negligence in this matter would not be condoned.

Last week, the provincial government moved thousands of individuals along the Sutlej River after the river reached a high flood level at Ganda Singh Wala. Punjab remains on high alert for floods ahead of another monsoon period.
