Glacial Lake Outburst Causes Flooding in Gilgit Baltistan

GILGIT: Officials reported on Friday that a glacial lake outburst in Ghizer district, Gilgit Baltistan (GB), has once again led to extensive flooding and devastation, resulting in the formation of a new artificial lake.

Faizullah Firaq, the GB government spokesperson, verified that a glacier burst at Tali Das in the Gupis region of Ghizer initiated the flooding and subsequent destruction.

He stated that numerous villages have been inundated, resulting in significant economic losses. Fortunately, there have been no reports of fatalities thus far.

According to the district administration, the Gilgit–Shandur Road is completely obstructed due to landslides. Landslides from two directions in the Tali Das stream have isolated Raushan village.

Ghizer’s additional deputy commissioner mentioned that a landslide in Raushan, Tali Das, has entirely stopped the Ghizer River’s flow since 3 AM, impacting more communities with rising floodwaters.

However, timely warnings to residents ensured there were no casualties.

GB Home Minister Shams Lone noted that despite the renewed devastation in Ghizer caused by the flood, no deaths have been reported thus far. He also mentioned that reports of stranded individuals have surfaced, and helicopter assistance has been requested.

A commander from Force Command Northern Areas has promptly deployed a helicopter for emergency rescue operations.

The government spokesperson stated that over 50 individuals have been successfully rescued to date. He also explained that the glacial outburst has obstructed the river’s flow in the area, causing water to accumulate and form a sizable lake, which poses a risk of submergence to nearby settlements.

He also affirmed that the GB chief minister is closely overseeing the situation.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecasted a new period of rainfall in various regions of the country starting tomorrow (Saturday).

As per the Met Office, Gilgit-Baltistan is expected to experience rain, wind, and thundershowers from August 23 to 27, with the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall in Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, and Shigar.

The Met Office has cautioned that landslides and mudslides may disrupt traffic in vulnerable mountainous areas during this time, advising authorities and residents to maintain heightened vigilance.
