KCCI Urges Proactive Measures to Mitigate Monsoon Challenges in Karachi

Muhammad Jawed Bilwani, President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), has voiced concerns over the persistent human and economic setbacks experienced by the city due to insufficient preparation and slow response times during monsoon seasons. He stressed the critical need for developing and implementing effective strategies well in advance to prevent the recurrence of past adversities.

In individual communications addressed to Chief Minister Syed Murad Shah, Mayor of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, and Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, Bilwani conveyed his sincere appreciation to the Sindh government for its noteworthy initiatives and committed endeavors aimed at enhancing Karachi’s living standards and business environment.

He remarked that the evident improvements throughout the city underscore the administration’s dedication to urban development. He further commended the continuous focus on enhancing infrastructure and improving civic amenities.

Bilwani noted that the numerous projects initiated by the Sindh government, including the restoration and expansion of vital road networks, advancements in solid waste disposal, and beautification efforts across various districts, have not only contributed to the city’s visual appeal but have also facilitated enhanced mobility and commercial activities. The increased emphasis on underdeveloped and previously neglected areas is particularly encouraging, reflecting an inclusive strategy for urban development. He said that these advancements have been acknowledged and valued by Karachi’s residents and business community alike.

While acknowledging these endeavors, Bilwani also drew attention to the recurring and severe issues the city encounters during the monsoon season, which is rapidly approaching.

He noted that almost annually, substantial rainfall leads to urban inundation, sustained water-logging, drain overflows, infrastructural damage, and interruptions to business operations. The immediate priority is the prompt and comprehensive cleaning of all drains and the entire rainwater drainage infrastructure, ensuring the elimination of blockages and maintaining unobstructed water flow during heavy rainfall.

In this regard, he advised that executing a city-wide drainage and sewerage upkeep initiative with defined timelines and rigorous monitoring would significantly mitigate the potential for flooding.

Some major drains that require immediate attention include Manzoor Colony Nullah, Orangi Nullah, Gujjar Nullah, Lyari Nullah, and Orangabad Nullah. Ideally, the cleaning campaign should commence by eliminating obstructions at entry points where rainwater and sewage enter these drains.

Beyond technical and operational actions, it is vital to guarantee coordinated collaboration among various departments and agencies involved in disaster management, infrastructural maintenance, and public services. Emergency response units should be mobilized and strategically positioned in areas prone to flooding. Public awareness campaigns should also be launched to educate citizens on essential precautions and civic responsibilities during the rainy season.

Bilwani expressed hope that with proactive leadership and timely intervention, Karachi will be better equipped this year to handle the monsoon season’s challenges, safeguarding the safety, dignity, and welfare of its residents while protecting the city’s vital infrastructure and economic stability.
