Rodri’s Injury Recovery: A Gradual Return to Play
Manchester City is carefully managing midfielder Rodri’s return from injury, implementing a strategy of consistent yet measured playing time, according to manager Pep Guardiola. This approach is set to begin with Saturday’s Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The anticipated comeback of Rodri, a Ballon d’Or contender who was sidelined for much of the 2024-2025 season due to an ACL injury, has boosted the morale of City supporters. They are eager to move past the disappointments of the previous season, where City concluded the league in third place and failed to secure any trophies for the first time since 2016-17.
Guardiola has confirmed Rodri’s inclusion in the squad traveling to Wolverhampton. However, defender Josko Gvardiol, midfielder Mateo Kovacic, and winger Savinho are unavailable due to injuries. Additionally, goalkeeper Ederson’s participation is uncertain amidst transfer rumors.
“Rodri is nearing his return, and his knee is in excellent condition. Following his appearance against Juventus at the Club World Cup in June, he was sidelined for six weeks. We are focused on preventing a recurrence,” Guardiola stated during Friday’s press conference.
“He now requires minutes in training and, more importantly, brief appearances in games. Our aim is to ensure a steady return without setbacks. In this demanding environment, maintaining rhythm is essential. His training has been positive, and he will travel tomorrow. We will determine his playing time, or he may receive minutes in subsequent matches.”
City is currently without Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker, who departed to Napoli and Burnley, respectively, following the expiration of their contracts. Jack Grealish has been loaned to Everton after losing favor with Guardiola.
Ederson and Savinho have been subjects of transfer speculation. However, Guardiola indicated that the goalkeeper, whose contract concludes next year, has not requested a transfer.
“I am uncertain about the number of departures, but the Saudi Arabian market remains open for a longer duration. Managers prefer to operate with an appropriate number of players who deserve playing time,” Guardiola added.
“Any club interested in a player should contact the club directly, as we do. My immediate concern is ensuring Savinho remains with us, ideally for many years, given his potential at 21 years old.
Ultimately, the player’s desires take precedence, followed by an agreement with the club.”
