Bethell to Captain England’s Inexperienced Squad Against Ireland

Jacob Bethell, a batting all-rounder, has been appointed as the captain of the England squad for their upcoming three-match series against Ireland. The matches are scheduled to take place in Dublin from September 17 to 21.

Since his international debut in September of the previous year, Bethell has participated in 29 international games for England across different formats. He is set to become the youngest captain in the history of the men’s cricket team.

At 21 years old, Bethell will surpass the 137-year-old record previously held by Monty Bowden. Bowden was 23 years and 144 days old when he captained England in a Test series against South Africa in 1888-89.

England’s selector, Luke Wright, voiced his support for Bethell’s appointment as captain. He expressed optimism that the series against Ireland will aid in further developing Bethell’s capabilities on the international stage.

Wright stated, “Jacob Bethell has consistently demonstrated impressive leadership qualities during his time with the England squads. The series against Ireland will offer him a valuable chance to refine these skills at the international level.”

In this T20I series against Ireland, Bethell will be leading a relatively inexperienced England squad. Several key players, including regular captain Harry Brook, Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, and Jamie Smith, will be rested as part of workload management strategies.

Furthermore, Marcus Trescothick will assume the coaching duties, taking over from Brendon McCullum. McCullum will also be absent from the three T20Is in Malahide, which are scheduled for September 17, 19, and 21.
