Pakistan’s ODI Series Loss to West Indies Ends Decades-Long Streak

LAHORE: Following their white-ball tour of the West Indies, which included both an ODI and T20I series, the initial contingent of Pakistani cricketers touched down in Lahore on Friday.

The returning group featured Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Salman Ali Agha, and Hassan Nawaz, along with Pakistan’s white-ball head coach, Mike Hesson, and additional members of the support team.

The tour presented a mix of outcomes for Pakistan. Under the leadership of Salman Ali Agha, the squad secured a 2-1 victory in the three-match T20I series. However, the West Indies proved dominant in the 50-over format.

In the decisive ODI series match, the West Indies achieved a substantial score of 294/6 in their allotted 50 overs.

Shai Hope delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 120 runs off 94 deliveries, which included 10 fours and five sixes.

Justin Greaves offered crucial assistance, contributing 43 runs from 24 balls and forming a partnership of 110 runs with Hope. Further contributions from Evin Lewis (37) and Roston Chase (36) bolstered their total.

Pakistan’s response culminated in a swift collapse, as they were bowled out for a mere 92 runs in 29.2 overs, resulting in a 202-run defeat.

Salman Ali Agha, the all-rounder and captain, was the top scorer with 30 runs off 49 balls, while Mohammad Nawaz remained not out with 23 runs.

Hasan Nawaz added 13 runs, but the top order struggled significantly. Opening batsman Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, captain Mohammad Rizwan, Hasan Ali, and Abrar Ahmed were all dismissed without scoring.

This victory signifies the West Indies’ first ODI series win against Pakistan in over thirty years, breaking a sequence of 10 successive series defeats.

The last instance of the Caribbean team defeating Pakistan in an ODI series was in November 1991, during their tour of Pakistan. Led by Richie Richardson, the West Indies won the series 2-0 under the captaincy of Imran Khan, with the second ODI ending in a tie.

Pakistan will now travel to the UAE for a tri-nation T20I series involving Afghanistan and the UAE, scheduled from August 29 to September 7 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Following this, the team will concentrate on the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to take place from September 9 to 28.
