Rashford Reflects on Manchester United’s Struggles, Cites Liverpool’s Model

Marcus Rashford has voiced his opinions on the challenges faced by Manchester United, drawing parallels with Liverpool’s successful rebuilding process. He suggested that a true transformation hasn’t even commenced under Ruben Amorim.

The 27-year-old Rashford moved to Barcelona on a season-long loan from his long-time club just recently. Before that, he spent time with Aston Villa on loan after seeing less playing time following Amorim’s arrival.

Last season saw United finish in 15th place under Amorim, marking their worst performance in the Premier League era.

Rashford emphasized the need for consistency in managerial appointments and strategies, pointing out that the club has had six different permanent managers since Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.

“We have performed far below expectations, but taking a step back, as I’ve been able to do, especially in recent months, what should we realistically expect?” Rashford commented.

“People mention a transition period, but to transition, you must first initiate it. The actual transition has yet to begin.”

“Liverpool’s resurgence involved hiring Jurgen Klopp and sticking with him. Success didn’t come immediately. People often recall his later years when he competed with Manchester City and won major trophies.”

Rashford further stated that initiating a transition requires a well-defined plan that is consistently followed.

“To start a transition, a plan is essential, and commitment to it is crucial. It’s challenging, but it requires a realistic assessment of the situation. We’ve had numerous managers, each with different ideas and strategies, leaving us in a state of limbo,” he explained.

Since Jim Ratcliffe acquired a minority stake in the club in late 2023, there’s been a push for a clearer, more structured plan. During the recent summer transfer window, the club invested over £200 million in forwards like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko.

Rashford believes United has lost sight of the principles established by Ferguson.

“During Ferguson’s tenure, principles were in place not only for the first team but throughout the academy. Players from various age groups understood the Manchester United way of playing,” Rashford noted.

“Any successful team maintains principles that new coaches or players must adopt or enhance.”

“At times, United showed a hunger to win, but it was often reactive. Constant changes in direction hinder the ability to consistently win the league.”

Rashford has made 426 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 138 goals and providing 42 assists. His recent loan move to Barcelona suggests he may have played his final game for the club, with a potential permanent transfer on the horizon.
