Gauff and Alcaraz Advance at Cincinnati Open

In the second round of the Cincinnati Open on Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz rebounded from a second-set setback to overcome Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia with a score of 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Alcaraz showed initial dominance, then faced a challenge before regaining control.

Alcaraz has been a consistent force, reaching the finals in each of his last six competitions. Next up, the Spaniard is slated to compete against Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands or Hamad Medjedovic of Serbia.

Alcaraz showed an unusual amount of unforced errors in the second set. However, he managed to collect himself and secure a 4-1 advantage in the deciding set, ultimately winning the match with a strong forehand.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff of the United States defeated Wang Xinyu of China 6-3, 6-2, successfully navigating some difficulties with her serve.

Despite serving eight double faults in the first set, second-seeded Gauff remained composed and clinched the match. She is set to face Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine in the subsequent third round.

Gauff acknowledged her rocky start but praised her recovery. She emphasized her focus on maintaining composure and avoiding previous errors.

Gauff’s Post-Match Comments

“My serve was shaky at first, but I managed to work through it,” Gauff stated. “I’m being patient, focusing on our practice drills, and trying to avoid repeating old mistakes.”

In other matches, Reilly Opelka of the United States defeated Alex de Minaur, the sixth-seeded player from Australia, with a score of 7-6(6), 6-4. Jessica Pegula also emerged victorious against Kimberly Birrell, winning 6-4, 6-3.
