Raducanu Set to Clash with Sabalenka in Round Two
Emma Raducanu delivered a convincing performance, defeating Olga Danilovic of Serbia 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round of the Cincinnati Open at Champions Court this past Saturday.
This victory occurred shortly after Raducanu’s addition of Francis Roig, previously with Rafael Nadal, to her coaching team on a permanent basis. This strategic move is believed to be a significant element in her improved play recently.
Danilovic had previously overcome British player Katie Boulter in her initial match, while Raducanu advanced directly to the second round. The Serbian player began strongly, securing a break against Raducanu in the very first game, suggesting a competitive match ahead.
The first set was marked by numerous service breaks, with both competitors experiencing swings in momentum. Following four breaks within the initial five games, Raducanu rallied from a 30-0 deficit to gain a crucial break, taking a 5-3 lead.
She then successfully served out the set with a notable ace, underscoring enhanced assurance and command on the court.
During the second set, Raducanu displayed exceptional play, capitalizing on errors made by Danilovic and obtaining a break at 3-2. From that moment forward, Raducanu sustained her control and did not concede another game, securing her place in the third round in Ohio.
Currently holding the world number 39 rank, which is four positions above Danilovic, Raducanu expressed satisfaction with her recent consistency and advancement.
“I’m really developing some momentum. I’m pleased with how I’ve maintained consistency over the past several months,” she commented post-match.
“I still believe there’s considerable progress to be made, and I’m dedicated to working diligently behind the scenes, investing numerous hours, and aspiring to have confidence in that effort.”
Raducanu is now preparing to compete against Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s top-ranked player, in the upcoming second round.
