Arooj Appointed Manager of Boys’ Team, a First in Football History

In a significant move towards promoting gender equality in sports, the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has designated Arooj Sohail Butt as the manager for Pakistan’s under-17 men’s national team. The appointment was made public on Sunday.

Butt’s assignment marks a historic moment as she becomes the first woman in the nation’s football history to manage a boys’ team at both the national and international levels.

Previously serving as PFF’s safeguarding officer, Butt holds certifications in safeguarding from FIFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF).

Her responsibilities will include supervising the under-17 squad as they gear up for the SAFF Championship and Asian qualifiers scheduled later in the year.

According to PFF representatives, this decision underscores the federation’s dedication to fostering an inclusive and professional setting, enabling proficient women to assume leadership positions within football.

This action corresponds with FIFA’s stance against discrimination and its advocacy for complete involvement of women in all aspects of football administration, as stated in its regulations and governance changes implemented in 2016.

Although women have been actively involved in Pakistani football at the foundational level for many years, their presence in high-performance and decision-making roles has been limited. However, in 2019, the PFF Normalisation Committee appointed Manizeh Zainli as general secretary.

Officials suggest that initiatives such as this aim to eliminate existing obstacles and inspire more women to participate in strategic and functional capacities.

One official stated, “This choice not only furthers gender equality but also strengthens our dedication to safeguarding, professionalism, and organizational excellence.”

The appointment also emphasizes the PFF’s commitment to FIFA and AFC safeguarding protocols, guaranteeing the protection of the rights and welfare of young athletes in the sport.
