Police Officer Martyred, Three Terrorists Neutralized in Bannu Checkpost Attack
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district, an attack on a security checkpost was thwarted, resulting in the martyrdom of a police officer and the elimination of three terrorists, authorities reported on Sunday.
Law enforcement sources indicate that militants launched an assault on the Fateh Khel checkpost utilizing heavy weaponry. This initiated a fierce exchange of gunfire between the officers and the assailants.
Bannu Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sajjad Khan stated that the prompt response of the police resulted in the killing of three terrorists and injuries to several others. He also confirmed the unfortunate loss of a police officer who valiantly fought during the intense confrontation.
RPO Sajjad Khan further mentioned that a comprehensive search operation is currently in progress within the area to locate any remaining militants.
Since 2021, Pakistan has experienced an increase in terrorist activities, particularly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan provinces.
In May of this year, there was a minor increase in militant attacks within Pakistan, even as heightened military tensions with neighboring India did not lead to a substantial surge in extremist violence.
Data from the Islamabad-based Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) shows a 5% rise in attacks compared to April. However, the overall assessment suggests that militant groups have largely remained contained despite the tense regional geopolitical environment.
According to PICSS’s monthly security assessment, May saw 85 militant attacks, slightly up from 81 in April.
These attacks led to 113 deaths, including 52 security personnel, 46 civilians, 11 militants, and four members of peace committees. Additionally, 182 individuals were injured, consisting of 130 civilians, 47 security personnel, four militants, and one peace committee member.
While the total number of attacks saw only a slight increase, a closer analysis of the data reveals some alarming patterns.
Fatalities among security personnel increased by a substantial 73%, highlighting the ongoing danger faced by Pakistan’s armed forces.
Civilian injuries also saw a dramatic rise of 145%, from 53 in April to 130 in May, emphasizing the growing impact of militant activities on the civilian population. Conversely, injuries among security personnel decreased by 20%, from 59 to 47.
During operations carried out by security forces in May, at least 59 militants were killed, while five security personnel died.
Combining militant attacks and security operations, the total casualty count for May was 172, including 57 security personnel, 65 militants, 46 civilians, and four peace committee members.
