Carlsen Secures $250,000 Top Prize
RIYADH: In a thrilling conclusion to the Esports World Cup final, Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen emerged victorious in the inaugural online chess competition. He triumphed over GM Alireza Firouzja in the Grand Final on Saturday, clinching the win with three decisive games.
The Norwegian chess master dominated the final, securing four wins and two draws, while conceding only one loss across the two sets. This performance earned him the coveted top prize of $250,000.
Carlsen’s match began with strong tactical plays, enabling him to secure early victories and establish a commanding position. After drawing two matches, he had a significant 3-1 lead.
Firouzja’s sole opportunity arose from a misstep by Carlsen, who moved his rook incorrectly after 50 moves, allowing Firouzja to seize the game.
However, Carlsen swiftly recovered, displaying precision and assertiveness to claim the subsequent two games.
In the ultimate game, Firouzja’s initial inactivity allowed Carlsen to adopt a bold strategy, capitalizing on the opening to seal the series.
Following his victory, Carlsen expressed his anticipation for opportunities, remarking that things unfolded ‘perfectly’ for him.
“I felt I was in better form today, so I anticipated chances, and indeed, it all worked out perfectly,” Carlsen stated.
The grandmaster also praised the ESports World Cup concept, specifically acknowledging the inclusion of chess, noting its uniqueness.
“It’s been a spectacular event, unlike anything I’ve witnessed before,” Carlsen commented.
Chess, originating from ancient board games, was integrated into the esports tournament following its rise in popularity during the pandemic, although this decision did face some criticism.
