Zverev Achieves 500th Career Win in Open Era
Alexander Zverev showcased resilience by overcoming a first-set loss to triumph against Matteo Arnaldi with a score of 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2 at the Canadian Open, securing his place in the round of 16. This victory marked the German tennis star’s 500th ATP match win, a significant milestone in his career.
Zverev now holds the distinction of being the 57th player in the Open Era to achieve 500 career wins.
The 2017 Canadian Open champion, Zverev, initially gained a 4-2 advantage in the first set, achieving a service break in the fifth game. However, Arnaldi responded by leveling the score at 4-4, breaking back in the eighth game. Arnaldi maintained composure, ultimately clinching the first set in a tie-break with a 7-5 score after an intense 81 minutes.
Zverev started the second set strong, swiftly establishing a 3-0 lead and maintaining his subsequent service games, ultimately securing the set at 6-3.
Subsequently, Zverev claimed five successive games after trailing 1-2, sealing the match after a total of 2 hours and 46 minutes, when Arnaldi’s backhand shot landed in the net.
Reflecting on his victory, Alexander Zverev acknowledged his good fortune in navigating through the initial set.
“It was a crucial moment, a very significant point for me,” Zverev commented.
“I was fortunate to make it through the first set and ultimately conclude the match in two sets.”
Zverev admitted that his performance wasn’t optimal but expressed satisfaction with his comeback after taking a break following his early exit from Wimbledon.
“I took some necessary time off for myself. I am pleased to be back playing,” he stated.
In the fourth round, Zverev is set to compete against the 14th seed, Francisco Cerundolo, who defeated his fellow countryman Tomas Martin Etcheverry with scores of 6-3, 6-4.
