Broad Urges England to Carefully Manage Archer’s Workload
LONDON: Stuart Broad, the former England fast bowler, has emphasized the need for England to carefully handle Jofra Archer’s workload. He cautioned against overusing the pacer after his comeback from a four-year injury absence.
Broad spoke to the British media before the fifth and final Test against India. He highlighted the significance of having a long-term strategy to prevent another extended period without the key bowler.
“We can’t afford to have Archer sidelined for another four years, bring him back, and then exhaust him to the point where he’s out for another four years,” Broad stated.
Broad underlined that proper management is crucial to ensure Archer’s availability for England in all formats. This is especially important for the demanding Test matches.
“I think Gus Atkinson has to be given an opportunity. Although he hasn’t had a significant workload, we need to evaluate him. He hasn’t faced top-tier competition in Test cricket yet,” he noted.
Broad pointed out that the forthcoming match is a crucial opportunity to assess Atkinson’s skills under pressure.
“It’s about finding the right balance in his participation so he can consistently contribute rather than risk another prolonged absence,” he concluded.
Since his return, the 30-year-old has made a strong impression, securing nine wickets in 88.3 overs with an average of 28.67. His return in this series was a major step after elbow and back injuries kept him out of action since 2021.
Earlier this week, England reinforced their pace options for the decisive match against India. They added all-rounder Jamie Overton to the squad for the fifth and final Test.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed his inclusion on Monday. He will be the sixth specialist fast bowler in the 15-member squad, joining Jofra Archer, Chris Woakes, Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, and Brydon Carse.
The fifth and final Test between England and India is set to commence on Thursday at The Oval. England currently holds a 2-1 lead in the series.
