Stokes Determined to Participate in Series Finale Starting Thursday

MANCHESTER: Despite concerns about his physical condition, England’s captain, Ben Stokes, expressed his determination on Sunday to play in the fifth and final Test against India, scheduled to commence on Thursday at The Oval.

During the post-match press briefing, Stokes mentioned that the injury was aggravated due to an intense workload throughout the series but affirmed that he can manage the issue.

“The problem is with my bicep tendon, which has been under significant strain due to the workload. It has been a persistent issue, but it didn’t worsen today, so I continued playing,” he elaborated.

The all-rounder has delivered 140 overs in this series, marking his highest workload in a Test series. This includes a notable five-wicket haul in India’s first innings at Old Trafford, his first such achievement in eight years.

Although he had to retire hurt on Friday following a blow while batting, Stokes came back to score a resolute century, his first in two years.

Acknowledging the physical strain, Stokes commented, “The workload has been quite substantial in this series. I exerted myself considerably at Lord’s, followed by a similar effort this week. I’ve told the team several times that pain is just a feeling.”

Stokes suggested that England might consider refreshing their bowling lineup to bring in fresh players for the final Test.

“Considering the duration we’ve spent on the field and the number of overs bowled, everyone will be quite tired. These rest days will be crucial, and we may need to make certain adjustments,” he stated, hinting at potential alterations to the pace attack.

He anticipates playing the final match before taking an extended break from Test cricket.

“Hopefully, it will improve, and I’ll be ready for the last game. I am quite confident that I will be playing,” Stokes concluded.

Notably, the fifth and final Test between England and India is set to begin on Thursday at The Oval, with England currently leading the series 2-1.
