Lauren James Injury Casts Shadow Over England’s Euro Final Hopes

England’s star forward, Lauren James, is uncertain for Sunday’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final clash against Spain. This follows an ankle injury she sustained during their semi-final victory over Italy, as confirmed by head coach Sarina Wiegman on Friday.

James suffered the injury shortly before the halftime break on Tuesday. She was later seen with ice applied to her ankle while on the bench for the remainder of the match.

During a press conference, Wiegman acknowledged the team’s concern regarding James’s fitness and emphasized her crucial role within the squad.

“She’s continuing her recovery. She is undertaking some drills on the field, and with two days remaining, we will allow her the necessary time. We are currently unsure if she will be ready, but our aim is to have all 23 players available for Sunday,” Wiegman stated.

The 23-year-old has been a key component of England’s Euro campaign, having scored 33 goals in her international career. She also played a significant part in their 4-0 group stage triumph over the Netherlands.

England hopes that James will recover in time to contribute as they seek to secure European glory against the reigning champions, Spain, in Switzerland on Sunday.

Midfielder Georgia Stanway emphasized James’s impact on the field, praising her ability to influence matches.

“When you give LJ the ball, you can expect her to challenge anyone and try to create a shot,” Stanway remarked.

James’s potential absence would be a considerable setback for England. She has received several awards, including the London Football Awards Women’s Young Player of the Year in 2023 and the North-West Football Awards Women’s Rising Star in 2020.
